Jersey City council members wrestle with lifetime health benefits ordinance

The public will get its chance to speak on an ordinance Wednesday that would limit lifetime health benefits to only those retiring Jersey City workers with 25 years of municipal employment.
But the ordinance, sponsored by Ward E Councilman Steven Fulop, but amendments to the legislation are significant enough, that it will have to be reintroduced at a alter meeting.
Fulop introduced the measure last month, saying it was city policy to only allow employees with 25 years of service to retire with lifetime benefits. A state law changed that, making it the city’s right to set a minimum requirement. Jersey City has none. Fulop wants to restore it to the maximum 25 years.
